Elephant.co.uk was launched by Admiral in September 2001 and was the UK’s first completely interactive car insurance website. This service not only offers quotes and sales on-line, but will also handle all after-sale service and claims on-line. All applicants are therefore extremely web literate with a tendency to be heavy users of the internet. This service is primarily aimed at the 20-35 year old motorist living in cities and driving large cars or hot hatches. Elephant.co.uk therefore offers competitive prices to relatively affluent motorists who have traditionally paid very high insurance premiums. As with the Diamond brand, Elephant.co.uk is supportive of good causes and at the time of its launch had already donated £17,000 to the wildlife charity Born Free. A further £1 is donated for every policy renewal. Over 70,000 motorists submit detailed applications via the web to Elephant.co.uk every month. The detailed nature of the application means that there is an extensive range of selections available. All applicants have been recruited using a mixture of both traditional (e.g. Press, DRTV) and Online Direct Marketing techniques (e.g. banners, e-mails). The insurance group databases are updated and cleaned monthly against PAF, MPS, TPS, Deceased and GAS.
